About Us

The Prospect Players is an extremely friendly amateur dramatic group based in Arnold, Nottingham. Now in our 40th year, we have staged over 100 productions.

We have rehearsals twice a week, traditionally Tuesdays and Fridays, at the Pondhills Community Centre in Arnold. We consider our high standard of performance to be mainly attributed to that of teamwork and friendship.

The group usually performs three shows a season, which lasts from November to May each year. All our performances are currently based at the Bonington Theatre in Arnold, Nottingham (which is part of the Arnold Leisure Centre). The shows that we perform range across a whole spectrum of genres, from farce and mystery, to musicals and period dramas.

The Prospect Players are a group with an extensive history, having originally been founded as the St. Mark’s Players in 1973. Based in Arnold, Nottingham, we have performed a wide range of plays over the years, including plays by the likes of William Shakespeare, Moliere, George Bernard Shaw, Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, Oscar Wilde, Harold Pinter, Noel Coward, Dylan Thomas, Eric Idle, Jeffrey Archer and Alan Ayckbourn…to name but a few!

In the early years the group put on two productions a year at Arnold Hill School. A few years later, the group moved their productions to Redhill School, still putting on two productions a year in the half term holidays.

In 1980 the group changed its name to the Prospect Players, and in 1982 changed the venue for its productions to the newly opened Bonington Theatre.

In 2004, the group entered the world of musical theatre for the first time with its production of Sing For Your Supper – a tribute to the music and lyrics of Richard Rogers and Lorenz Hart. After this met with great success, in 2005 the group put on their own production of ‘Oliver!’ by Lionel Bart. Again, this was met with great success.

The Prospect Players pride ourselves in being one of the best amateur theatre groups in Arnold and Nottingham – we strive to put on professional productions, and provider our audiences with the full ‘theatre-going’ experience.

Stop Press….

Members and Friends

The re-opening of the Bonington Theatre has been delayed while additional work is carried out on the lighting and there is currently no  firm date for the completion of this work.  We have tried a number of alternative venues but in the end we have decided to delay our production of Neville’s Island until next season. This was a hard choice for us as so much work had already been put into it by cast, crew and director but all is not lost and you will get the opportunity to see it in May next year.

The plays chosen for our 2013/14 season are :
Last of the Red Hot Lovers by Neil Simon
What happens when you’re the only Loyalist, fish restaurateur - left in a sexual revolution? It’s the 70s, and Barney Cashman, middle-aged wannabe lothario is ready to defect.   Whisky-supping man-eaters; unstable actresses and staunchly depressed housewives all lock horns with our hero, but where will true lust lie for the beleaguered cod expert? Prepare to laugh yourself back in time and all the way into Barney’s mum’s apartment.  Classic wit from the TONY, EMMY, Golden Globe and Lifetime Achievement (American Comedy Awards) Award-winning writer of ‘Barefoot in the Park’ and ‘Sweet Charity’ – Neil Simon
The Thrill of Love by Amanda Whittington
This play about Ruth Ellis, notorious as the last woman to be hanged in Britain - attempts to answer some of the nagging questions behind this apparently cut-and-dried case. Why did Ellis plead not guilty but offer no defence? Why did she show no remorse? And just who was she trying to protect? The good news is that the playwright has successfully connected to the emotional answers to these questions. And her appealing way into the story is the introduction of a narrator, Detective Inspector Jack Gale, who is our guide for the evening
Neville’s Island by Tim Firth
Four out-of-condition, middle-aged businessmen sent off on a team building exercise in the Lake District succeed in being the first people ever to get shipwrecked on an island on Derwentwater. Bound in fog, menaced by wildlife and cut off from the world, this perfunctory middle-class exercise turns into a carnival of recreminations, French cricket and sausages.
We still do not have a firm re-opening date for the Bonington Theatre although Gedling Borough Council are targeting September, so we hope that all will be well for our first production in November and we look forward to seeing you then.

Thank you for your continued support of the Prospect Players

Join Us

We are always looking for members, and we welcome everyone into our group! You don’t necessarily have to act, we’re always looking for members to help backstage or front of house. Any production involves not just ‘performers’ but also people who, for example, build and paint the sets, design and operate the lights, make or obtain the costumes, beg, borrow or make the ‘props’ or who work ‘front of house’ and look after the audience.

To find out more about joining either come down to one of our rehearsals, or contact us to find out more.

Become A Friend

If being a full member of the Prospect Players isn’t for you, but you’d like to support the group in some way, perhaps you might like to think about becoming a Friend of The Prospect Players? As a friend, you will receive a complimentary ticket and programme for each production, a copy of our bi-monthly newsletter, as well as invitations to group socials. To become a friend for a year costs just £17, so contact us to find out more.

If you know somebody who is a theatre fan, why not make them a friend as an extra special Birthday or Christmas gift?
